Description

"Four of the Museum 's large Collection of Aprons.

Similar at first to those worn by operative masons, changes appeared in the 18th century , but no specific directions were promulgated until 1815. The 18th century aprons.therefore, differed widely and were often designed to the owner's fancy, sometimes handpainted and embellished with numerous emblems. One of the best known is shown, upper centre. designed by Bro. Hixon of Covent Garden, London. Faith is represented on the right, Hope on the left and Charity on the flap. The sacred volume with other masonic emblems occupies the centre. The apron is made of lambskin 14"" square, edged with dark blue silk.

On the right is a satin apron 17"" x 19"", 1790, bearing the Arms of the ""Antients"" Grand Lodge (by W. Newman of Widegate Street, London) .

On the left is a Royal Arch apron c. 1810, 17"" x 19¾, handpainted with emblems in gold, including a five branched candelabra on the tessellated pavement. The blue edging of the apron is ⅝"" wide.

Lower centre is a shaped apron in white lambskin 16"" x 1½""' , 1818, hand painted with both craft and R.A . Emblems and having leather strings."
