Description

OBVERSE: Portrait head to right; below, a rectangular panel in which is a scene of a ship among icebergs; behind each end of the panel hang two flags. Around, DR. ELISHA KENT KANE, THE GREAT ARCTIC NAVIGATOR, U. S. N

REVERSE: Three columns standing on a squared pavement, two in front adorned with globes, one at the back surmounted by the letter G above which are seven stars, with the sun and moon at the sides; above all, an irradiated eye. Between the pillars, three candles and a five-pointed star on one side and a ladder and the figure of the Theorem of Pythagoras on the other; a coffin below; at the sides, two palm-branches enclosing the whole. Around, NON NOBIS SOLUM SED TOTO MUNDO NATI/MDCCCLIX
