Description

OBVERSE: Crowned bust of King Alfred, wearing a collar of ermine. Around, DOMINUS. ILLUMINATIO . MEA.

REVERSE: Shield of arms, first and fourth those of Oxford University; second and third those of the Freemasons. Above, as crest, the sun in splendour. Around, SIT. LUX. ET. LUX. FUIT.


This medal was struck in 1772 by the Royal Alfred Lodge which was erased in 1790, and not by the Alfred Lodge No. 340, founded in 1814. According to Lane this “Lodge of Alfred” was
