Description
"OBVERSE: An ornamental shield with the Royal Arms, differenced with a label and charged with an inescutcheon, surmounted by a coronet, bearing the Arms of Hanover. In the outer circle, which is in the form of a garter, HONI • SOIT • QUI • MAL • Y • PENSE The space between shield and garter is pierced and filled with blue enamel.
REVERSE: In 9 lines, engraved in script lettering, CELSISS/PRINCEPS. AUG. FRED./SUSSEXLÆ DUX./TOTIUS. APUD./ANGLOS. SODAL. ARCHIT./CURIO. MAX./PROV. DUNELM./ ADIIT./A. D. 1822. ÆRÆ ARCHIT. 5826. Above is attached a coronet, with a ring for suspension.
The medal was instituted by the Duke of Sussex, Grand Master, in commemoration of his visit to the Province of Durham in 1822."
