OBVERSE: Portrait bust nearly full-face, descending to the lower edge of the medal; the date, 1907, on the left shoulder, and at the base, in a cartouche, P. G. D. ENGLAND Around, • WILLIAM JAMES HUGHAN • /BORN FEBRUARY 13. 1841 INITIATED JULY 14. 1863

REVERSE: In a panel between two arches of Gothic arcading, extending to the upper edge, a reproduction of the Quatuor Coronati from the “Isabella Missal”; below, in ex: A FOUNDER OF 2076/MASONIC HISTORIAN/ AND AUTHOR

Undoubtedly the greatest of the Pioneers, Hughan’s many and various contributions to the study of Craft History in every branch, more especially in matters relating to its old documents, have done more than those of any single student towards providing a sound groundwork for our knowledge of the History of Freemasonry.
