Description

OBVERSE: The Arms of the Freemasons on an ornamental shield, within a collar formed of thistles and thistle leaves, from which is suspended a jewel bearing a representation of St. Andrew with his cross. Crest, above, a Castle. Around, IN THE LORD IS ALL OUR TRUST

REVERSE: The Grand Master standing on a square pavement, clasping hands with a Brother, while his left hand points towards the right background, where Harpocrates, finger on lips, is reclining against a pedestal, his left hand holding the compasses. On the pavement lie mallet and chisel, and in the foreground the V.S.L. open with the square and compasses, surrounded by three lighted candles. At the back stand two columns surmounted by globes; and behind all, the façade of a building, the sky above being occupied by a blazing sun on the left and a crescent moon and seven stars on the right, an irradiated eye in the centre. Below, in ex: AMICITIA VIRTUTE/ET SILENTIO

The Foundation Stone of the new Edinburgh Exchange was laid on 13th September, 1753, by George Drummond, Grand Master of Scottish Freemasons and Provost of Edinburgh.
