Description

OBVERSE: A male figure, clothed with an apron bearing the letters G M L, gauntlets, collar and Master’s jewel, holding in his right a pair of compasses, the points applied to the top of a pedestal, on the front of which is a five-pointed star; and in his left hand a trowel. Behind, near by on the left is part of the front of a Temple; on the right, in the distance, a ruin. On the ground are a sword and plumb, level and other Masonic implements, and the letters H E F (indicating the engraver). Near the right edge is a sprig of acacia; and above all the All-seeing Eye. Around, GRAND MASTERS LODGE/CENTENARY 30 JANY 5849

REVERSE: Inscription in 5 lines, THE MOST NOBLE/AUGUSTUS FREDERICK/DUKE OF LEINSTER/GRAND MASTER OF THE/ORDER OF FREE AND/ACCEPTED MASONS/OF IRELAND

Ribbon, 33 mm., light blue, with bar and hanger.

The Grand Masters’ Lodge was intended to play a part somewhat similar to that of the Grand Stewards’ Lodge of the Grand Lodge of England. The Duke of Leinster, who presided at the Centenary of the Lodge, was Grand Master of Ireland from 1813 to 1874.
