Description
"OBVERSE: A building of Norman character in process of erection, with a ladder reaching to the top; Masons at work, hoisting a large stone by means of a rope, and one on the ladder carrying stone on his back. In the background, on the right, two Masons working at a bench; and below this a gavel, a maul and other implements. Below, ONE OF THE NINE WORTHIES 8
REVERSE: Two pillars, bearing respectively compasses and square standing at the summit of three steps. Behind, a squared pavement extending into the distance below two broken arches to a third from which the keystone is being prised by a man with a crowbar. Within this arch is a book bearing the square and compasses, with a five-pointed flower or Star below. On the pavement lie working tools. On the left of the scene is a level surmounted by a crescent moon, and on the right a plumb rule and blazing sun. Below, SIT LUX ET LUX FUIT Above, on both OBVERSE: and REVERSE: the circle is broken by an ornamental floriated border, the ring for suspension being attached to a hand which is grasping the edge of the medal.
The “Nine Worthies” or “Nine Excellent Masters” were selected, annually from 1792 until the Union, by the Athol Grand Lodge. Their duty was to visit the various Lodges and see to the general uniformity of their working."
