Description

OBVERSE: A draped and winged female figure standing by a Doric column, on which she is writing IN/HONOUR/OF THE/SUBSCRI while in her left hand she carries a trumpet and a scroll on which appears the elevation of a building in the Greek style. In the left background is a building surrounded by scaffolding, and from above fall the rays of the sun. In the ex: MDCCLXXX and on the base of the column (small) L • P • F •

REVERSE: Inscription in 9 lines, TO/(blank)/IN GRATEFUL TESTIMONY/OF A LIBERAL/ SUBSCRIPTION/TOWARDS/COMPLEATING/THEIR HALL and around, GRAND LODGE OF FREE MASONS IN ENGLAND (The blank is filled by the name Hugh Dixon Esq., engraved.)

The first Freemasons Hall was designed by Bro. Thomas Sandby, for whom the office of Grand Architect was created. The foundation stone was laid on 1st May, 1775, the officiating Grand Chaplain being the Rev. Dr. William Dodd, later imprisoned for forgery.
