Description

"Wedgwood 4” x 8½” Bowl c.1780-90 Inscribed James Bradley and decorated with Masonic symbols.

Wedgwood was founded Burslem, England, on 1 May 1759 by the potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood.

Wedgwood was quickly successful and was soon one of the largest manufacturers of Staffordshire pottery, and was known as 'a firm that has done more to spread the knowledge and enhance the reputation of British ceramic art than any other manufacturer', exporting their wares worldwide.

It was particularly successful at producing fine earthenware and stoneware that were accepted as equivalent in quality to porcelain (which Wedgwood only made later), though considerably less expensive.
