Description

This beautiful medal is noted by Marvin in his supplement. It is one of several struck by thme Dutch brethrenn in appreciation of the zeal and generosity of their lamented Grand Master, William Frederic Charles. The medal commemorative of his twenty-fiveyears’ rule will be found at No. 297 in bronze; that in honor of his silver wedding No. 299 in bronze, and (No. 292) in silver. One struck on the occasion of his marriage is also in this collection (No. 291). This medal was struck to commemorate the semi-centennial of his Masonic rule, 25th November, 1866. The jubilee was celebrated by the Grand Lodge with great splendour, the Grand Master presenting to Grand Lodge his rich collection of Masonic works, manuscripts, &c., formerly the property of Dr. Kloss, deceased. Obverse—Clothed bust to left of Prince William Frederick Charles, with collar and jewel of Grand Master, with several decorations. Below the bust, ,‘J. Elion F.” Inscription, “Gvl Fredenicvs Carol Per L Annos M. Ap. Caem, Bat. Mag. (William Frederic Charles, for 50 years Grand Master of the Freemasons of Great Batavia” (i.e., Holland). Reverse—Female robed and wearing a crown, on her breast a lion rampant, having a square and compasses and plumb in her left hand; in her right hand a wreath, which she holds over an altar, on which are placed the collar and jewel of the Grand Master and a gavel. Above is an irradiated eye within a triangle, some of the rays reaching to the altar, Three of the four corners of the altar are visible, composed of figures witharms raised apparently supporting the top. On two of the sides, “1816” and “1866,” the whole resting on a raised platform, which is divided into large squares.
