Description

The Ludwig whose portrait appears on the obverse of this medal was the first Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, who succeeded in 1790 and died in 1830.

Obverse.—Profile bust to left, in uniform, wearing a very high embroidered collar, with broad ribbon over the shoulder, and star on breast; on the arm, Loos. Legend, Ludwig Gmossherzog von Hessen und bei Rhein,” and below the bust, Protector. (Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse, and Protector on the Rhine.) Reverse.—The front of a Temple, having six Ionic columns, and a closed door in the centre, approached by a flight of steps (nine and seven). Legend, “Johannes B. Evnng. Z. Eintracht Im 0. V. Darmstadt” (Johnthe Evangelist of Harmony, Orient of Darmstadt). In exergue, in three lines, “Eingeweiht I A M. 25 Aug. I 5818. Dedicated Aug. 25, 1818.
