"This is a 1725 mezzotint portrait of John Theophilus Desaguliers engraved by Peter Pelham after a painting by Hans Hysing.
• Subject: John Theophilus Desaguliers (1683–1744) was a French-born British natural philosopher, clergyman, and engineer who played a crucial role in popularising Newtonian physics.
• Scientific Role: He served as an experimental assistant to Sir Isaac Newton and was a demonstrator for the Royal Society, frequently performing experiments.
• Symbolism: The portrait shows him holding a magnifying glass and a prism, symbolising his deep involvement in scientific research and optics.
