Description

"This is a portrait engraving of Martin Folkes (1690–1754), a prominent English antiquary and mathematician who served as President of the Royal Society.

• Artist: The engraving was created by the famous English painter and satirist William Hogarth.

• Subject: Martin Folkes is depicted wearing a long 18th-century wig and a coat, with a broken column behind him.

• Context: This work is an etching and line engraving based on a painting Hogarth produced of Folkes in 1741."
