Description

OBVERSE: Head and shoulders nearly full-face of the Duke of Sussex, wearing the Grand Master’s collar and jewel, and also the star of an Order. Around, H • R • H FREDK DUKE OF SUSSEX M. W. G. M.

REVERSE: The façade of a building of Greek type, with pediment, on the top of which are three figures representing Faith, Hope and Charity. Above, round the edge, FREE MASON’S HALL • A • L • 5817 Below, in two lines, DEDICATED/ SEPR 23 1819.

This medal was for long believed to refer to the rebuilding of Freemasons Hall, London, the date presenting a puzzle. It was the date which led to the discovery of the correct explanation.
